Author Topic: Looking at computer parts, need opinions and recommendations.  (Read 2528 times)

So I'm browsing Newegg for parts. I just want decent parts for low prices (I don't need a case or monitor. I don't honestly care what the computer itself looks like, and I already have three different cases, two monitors, and multiple mice around the house).

My only requirement is to run L4D and CoD4 on medium-high settings with a decent frame rate (30-50 FPS). Better yet, maxed out settings - I really don't want the computer to be obsolete in a month.

So anyway, here's what I've found so far:

Graphics card 1 (8600GT 256MB)
Graphics card 2 (8600GT 512MB)
Graphics card 3 (9600GT 512MB)
Motherboard 1 (GIGABYTE MA790GP)
Motherboard 2
Motherboard 3
Motherboard 4 (GIGABYTE EP43)
CPU (Intel E7200 Dual Core)
Power Supply
RAM
Hard Drive 1

Again, DECENT PARTS for LOW PRICES. I have like $35 and I don't think my parents would spend much, if any money on parts. Under $1000 would be preferable.

Help, please. I'm sick of using stuffty computers and not being able to do thing one about it.

You can't get a computer for $35. Also it is good if you get a budget for it, saying "oh low cost" doesn't imply much other than not the top of the line.

Also on Motherboard 1 and 3 you have an AMD cpu socket, while on #2 you have Intel slot.

No kidding.

Under $1000 then, if that's possible. I have some parts from another computer but I don't know the specs of said computer.

Would it be helpful to say I don't know jack stuff about computers? Because I don't. :f

Get a 8600 GT with 512 MB of VRAM, I have one and it runs L4D pretty decent.
In addition, I have a 2.2 GHz single core AMD processor with 1 GB of RAM.

I can run L4D at medium settings at around 30-35 FPS, but I don't know about CoD4.

$1000 is plenty :D.

I have a computer list made for $540.

Try to get Nvdia 8600 for a discount, my dad got our Lenovo computer for just 650$ (estimate) including the upgrades.

Upgrade to 9600GT for $20. It's much more powerful and will completely own games like L4D and COD4. 8600GT is weak.

As for a motherboard, I'd recommend the EP43 motherboard from Gigabyte. Lots of great features, stable board, decent BIOS and a good price.

For the processor, I would go with the E7200 Core 2 Duo from Intel. Plenty of power and an amazing price.

You can get 4GB of memory pretty cheap (2GB for about $30 so just under $50 for 4GB). Stick to the decent brands (Corsair, G-skill, GEIL, OCZ etc).

Don't cheap out on a powersupply. The CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX should work quite nicely.

Operating system? I'd recommend Vista 64-bit. I've been using it for months, no problems. Good driver support, and it can address more than 3.5GB of memory.

Hard drives, just stick to the good brands (Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung). As for CD Drives...thats your pick. It doesn't really matter. You can get BlueRay disk drives if you want to watch some HD movies on your computer.

Choose from this list of 9600 GTs if you want.
That second 8600 GT with 512 VRAM is loving ugly, btw. I was lucky to get the pretty 512 VRAM one from EVGA.

Searched around again for RW's recommendations, reading the reviews and checking prices along the way. Are my choices any good?

The parts you chose based upon my recommendations seem to be solid decisions. It's really just a matter of how much you are able/willing to spend.

Some of the Motherboards you selected only use AMD processors. Make sure it supports Intel or you're boned.

7000 Gt runs faster.

Ya, those imaginary cards are pretty fast.

To say the truth, I was very bummed out when I realized the top of my graphics card would face the ground. I wanted all to see it.

To quote my sister "I have a AMD 7890 GFX"(I was talking to my bro about computers so she mocked me :D)

Actually, I have a windowed part of my case where you can see everything.

So, yeah, looks count :P
