Not everyone is looking for lightweight. Sometimes heavy just feels nice. Also if your sword starts to lose its edge you should probably sharpen it duh.

They also lack cross-guards.

EDIT: at least in the case of mine, not all viking swords really have one, or one that protrudes very far.

EDITEDIT: also, katanas are generally two-handed unless you're unorthodox with swordsmanship. Vikings get shields, or another sword.

try swinging a broad sword 10 times in 10 seconds, by the time you go for the second one the samurai would've cut you in half.

Katanas are for slashing, and broadswords for hacking or thrusting. Those two require sheer weight or power where slashing requires precision or speed.

No stuff. This is why I carry a gun. You're not going to be out there in the field today swinging around a samurai sword like a Ninja. I have a collection of broadswords and I even have a set of Katanas. When you're collecting outdated weaponry, field work is less of a concern. It's not about the weight or sharpness of the blade per-say, its just the one you get the most appeal from. In my case it's the heavy weight class. I also don't have puny-ass arms.

Katana swordsmanship was based around the idea of dodging an attack whilst slicing the opponent at the same time, they have no need for shields!

Actually, if I were to choose, a Bastard (Hand and a half) Sword would be my sword of choice.
