Typically don't play with a pick. 

(excuse) I hadn't been practicing much, and then suddenly my friend's band needed a bassist for two shows in one day (with a week's notice), and i blew out my right hand fingers at practice.  I don't enjoy bleeding to much, so I went with the pick.  Also 2mm picks are virtually indestructible
