He probably volunteered and it is pretty rewarding. My ancestors in the late 1910's immigrated to South Africa when Rhodesia was a part of it in a city called Sailsbury because the diamond and gold industry was booming there. From then on, my great grandfather had a jewelry business where he'd buy, sell, and trade diamonds and gold and made a good living from it compared to where he came from (I believe somewhere around Newcastle in England in a small rubbish town). My grandfather had kids, and his kids had a very happy life in Sailsbury (now known as Harare I think). In the 50's when money became scarce in Rhodesia my grandfathers kids moved to proper South Africa in this town called Stellenbosch which is close to Cape Town, where they got into the wine business and opened up a winery in this small farm. They had 3 kids, and 2 of which moved overseas to America with their uncle who was a practicing physician in Boston in the mid 60's. My grandfathers 3rd kid stayed in South Africa, and today he lives in Johannesburg who lives a normal life as a dentist. End of my story, sorry if I annoyed anyone. I've been told this story a million times by one of my uncles. I just wanna prove a point: in some countries in Africa, it is livable.

I've been to South Africa many times to visit a few relatives, but ZA is the only partially developed country in Africa, honestly. At the rate South Africa is going, it will end up like Zimbabwe with the corrupt politicians. South Africa's economy is falling at a crippling rate. I will admit, ZA is a beautiful country especially along the coastline along the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Kwa-Zulu Natal. I think it's doomed though. When I was in South Africa a few years ago, we were in Cape Town and it's a magnificent city with lots of vibrancy. The sad thing though, is that you go from a wealthy white area; to black and/or Coloured slums. It feels so divided, and half 1st world and half 2nd world.

Well only elks can't work with jewelry. Also when my great grandfather fled to SA to live a better life, most of the diseases prevelant there now were either non-existent back then - or extremely uncommon.
