Line in looks the same as mic, but should be a different color, I believe the standard mic is red.

They don't have color on the circles, they're both black to match the color of the laptop, although, the left port has a microphone logo next to it, and the right port has a headphones logo next to it, and on my headset, if i remember correctly, the microphone plug is red with a microphone logo on the wire and the headphones plug is green with a headphones logo on the wire, i plug the microphone wire into the microphone port and the headphones wire into the headphones port, yet it still doesn't work

My cat chewed my earphones and they are actualy broken :o.

...Snap, i'm going off topic in my own topic about how i need help with m headset ._.

Did you try setting the headsets as the default audio device?

I had a similar problem, I just looked up my model of head set and some trouble shooting on google. That's what did it for me. I hope your dilemma turns out to be a good learning experience?

I can't cause it doesn't appear in the list of audio devices, it only appears if it's USB, Line In doesn't seem to work

I dunno if that'll help me, but i'll give it a try

La bump!

Update, i'm trying it on the Vista PC now, and in Audacity, i gotta use the Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input option in the Recording device list when having the headset plugged in, it works just fine, with Windows Live, i gotta use Microphone (High Definition Audio Device), even though there is two of 'em, one works and the other doesn't, with Steam, it's the same thing

Here's the Sound window

Edit: Oh wait, Line In is the ports on the back of the PC? If so, the ports on the front of the Vista PC works fine, but the Laptop doesn't have that, only the ports on the side, i'll have to mess with stuff again

I bought a Microsoft Headset, installed the software etc, but people on L4D say that they cannot hear me good, and it just echoes. All the volumes are turned up, on L4D and my computer, so IDK. But I do believe people on teamspeak can hear me good. It is a Microsoft Lifechat LX-3000.
