Author Topic: I'm thinking about hosting a LAN party.  (Read 4326 times)

We played a real time grand strategy wargame at the last lan party I went to. It was slow and not everyone got to play.

This spring break I'm hosting the lan party. I haven't figured out what the main game we're going to play is, but I'm leaning towards a path beyond. It's free and everyone's computer should be able to run it. Plus it's awesome. I should be able to get enough people over to run a decent 4v4 or 5v5. I've got Rise of Nations and Age of Empires as back ups.

Oh, a basement is a good place to host. That's where I'm hosting mine. If you live some place cold, don't forget a space heater or to remind people to dress warmly. On the plus side, you won't have to worry about computers overheating. You can also shove sodas in a snow bank instead of refrigerating them (really useful).

Now I wanna host a LAN party, but when I get my own room. I'll have a lot of space over for another desk or two, so why not make LAN party space? :D

Btw, you also need to think about how far you/your friends need to move their computers, depending  on the type.

Laptop
Not much to say here. Easy to carry, sometimes 6-8 pounds if it's a good gaming laptop. Battery life will be a problem if you don't have any plugs to hook up the charging system.

Desktop PCs
Kinda hard to move around alone. You should really only do this if your partying with neighbors, because annoyed parents will be annoyed when you take their $600 PC up to little Jimmy's house in North Dakota.

I know about mobility of the PC for parties, but nothing about what to DO at one :D

Double Toast;

I think a good idea for a LAN party would be some sort of prize, that no one has, not even the host. Maybe a copy of a game or something via Steam.

Desktops too.

I'm going to see if I can get a garage or something, the nice thing about those is A) It's winter in northern Virginia, you don't need refrigerators. B) Computers won't overheat. You can scream all the forget you want.

Only real problem would be getting some internets out there.

As for the game, I'm probably going to do Urban Terror.

Pretty low in terms of system req's, easy to pick up, fun as anything, Quake mod, free, we'll see.

The "A path beyond' seems like a wonderful game.
It also looks easier on the computer yet more things to do with vehicles and all that.

You should ask for specs from the other computers to find a good game to fit that can be run from all of them.

Real men use ethernet cords.

I'd love to do TF2, but not everyone has it, or even Steam for that matter. No more than eight guys are coming, probably, and more than one probably is going to be playing on a laptop.

I want to join Wedge in A Path Beyond :(

If someone wants to host a Blockland APB server, that would be awesome. I'll make a topic in the games section about it.
