There can be life ending events but I doubt with as big the solar system is that the planet will be destroyed by a comet or asteroid. To take it further the OP said "WORLD" The Earth's existence is not defendant on life or anything else besides it's self.

Anyways, whenever somebody ever mentions this to me, I ask, "Do you ever think that the Mayans went through one day and started writing this calendar, and by the time they got up to 2012, they just said 'forget it' and stopped?"
