Would you like to see another Left4Block server?

Yes.
No.

Author Topic: On the topic of L4B servers...  (Read 2138 times)

Well, I've tried a lot of zombie servers on Blockland, majority of which are hosted by noobs, or huge-egoed folks on a power trip.  I really enjoyed the few good zombie servers I've been on, but lately there has been a drought.

Basically, would anyone here consider joining another zombie server?  I know there have been a ton, but I hope to make this one good without all the crap you get now.

The build is gonna use some extra bricks (3x, 5x, 8x, ramp inverted, etc.).
It's gonna use some extra weapons.
It's gonna use a new colorset.
It's also gonna use some extra vehicles.
And it's gonna use RTB.

So, for those folks who don't have the pleasure of having all the add-ons I have, you'll obviously have to download, maybe quite a few.

This will be the first server I have put up (so you'll have to deal with me working the kinks out), and will not (and probably never) be dedicated.

Please post your suggestions and feedback, and tips on how to run a zombie server.

Also, what do you folks think is a good player limit for the server?  I've seen 4, and I've also seen 8.  IMO, 8 is more fun.

A small L4B build would deserve 8 a huge one would be more of a 10. Tell me when the server is up so i can help you build.

Well, I have the server up right now actually, just set up all the add-ons and such.  So there is absolutely nothing there, yet.

Let me know if you can get on, if you don't even see it in the server list that means I have to do the stupid port forwarding thing.  I shouldn't have to, but maybe I do.

or huge-egoed folks on a power trip.
I'm sure you're talking about me >_>

Nah, I don't think I've ever played on a zombie server by you, unless your name is different than your forum name.

Sorry for double post.

With some help from Bikerdude3000, I port forwarded.  I did everything that the tutorial here and the the tutorial at www.portforward.com said.

There was one discrepancy, the tutorial here said the private IP's last number (on the blockland TCP and UDP ports) was 45, the portforward.com just left it blank, which I assume means 0, because I can't leave it blank without it giving an error telling me not to leave it blank.

I went with 45, and my server still shows up as "dead" according to bikerdude.

So should I go with 0 or 45?

Any other things I should know with port forwarding?

jeez, i have given up on trying to port-forward. ive tried a million times and i cant get it to work at all... its odd really, i swear i do everything exactly as all walkthroughs say to, but no luck for me :(    anyways, if you get your server up and running, i may join. although i probably wont be able to go online on BL as right now, ( i dont know about you, but...) its 02:12 where i am, so not likelies :(  good luck!

Okay, I figured out what my problem was, first, I totally missed the first part of the portforward.com page for blockland.  And because of that, I didn't have a static IP.  Those things are fixed, gonna test now.

EDIT: IT WORKS!

YES!

Server name is: Duck's Left4Block (WIP)

It's not up, and prolly won't be up again til tomorrow, but be sure to turn "show empty servers" off your filters for me k?

Hey Duck.
I'd be glad to help build and such if I see your server up. Whenever it is up, see if you can't find me in the IRC and PM me.

A fix or edit needs to be made to the mod before it should be used for one of these servers. Death messages from zombies and Downed seem to be broken by the v10 update, but I think they're fixable.

If you're running the server, do not run the "New Rewards" mod at the same time as Zombies. It edits how bottomPrint messages work and so breaks the weapon ammo counter.

If you must use one of the several slightly inaccurate machine guns on the forum, edit the code so they actually work with the ammo system (look at how Zombies did it with the Shotgun and Minigun), otherwise the one gun you have that doesn't take ammo to fire will be abused.

I don't think I know what the New Rewards mod is, or I even have it.  Does it come with Blockland as default?  Or with one of the server mods?

And I don't plan on using the ammo mod.  It's not sophisticated enough to use with how good the zombie code is.

I also don't plan on using the downed option either, it is broken, and I don't have the time to fix it.

Hopefully with the way it works now, even without ammo it'll still be challenging, trust me, I'll be testing the difficulty a lot.

UPDATE ON BUILD:

We have our first safe zone, no pics just yet, but I'll say it's quite blue, to signify the first stage of the level.  I'm planning on color-coding each stage by what color the safe room and some other miscellaneous stuff is.

Hopefully we can get some multi-level combat up, with zombies running up and down stairs.  I'm also planning on some attacks from above, as in, zombies jumping off of the roof of the building in front of you.

Some of the best parts of L4D come in rushing TO the safe room, with the passage full of zombies, rather than reach a point and defending.  So plan on opening a door to the next stage and trying to get to the button as fast as you can with zombies all over the place.

Remember, server name is Duck's Left4Block (WIP).

my portal obby has zombies in it, but its still puzzles (many are timeing puzzles)

Well, no matter what I put my schedule quota at, once we had our first section up, it would give us the schedule quota limit reached error.   I tried setting it at 9999999999999, still would give us that error.

We had a few blinking lights, about 7 doors, and a zombie release system composed of about 9 events total.

Help!
