i am brand new at the forums...how do i get an icon under my name?

Go to "Profile," next to Search and Log Out. Hit it. Then go to Forum Profile Information, and upload an avatar.
If it's a .gif, make sure it's 75x75 or smaller.

Useless tip, he clearly didn't know the name of it so doing a search wouldn't have actually produced anything helpful.

It can be a .PNG as well.

"Profile" > "Modify Profile" > "Forum Profile Information" > Check "I will upload my own avatar" > Hit "Browse..." > Scroll to the bottom of the page when uploaded > Hit "Change Profile"

There. Your own avatar.
