I can't exactly picture a Blockland-esque Spas-12, what would one look like?

Sometimes smoothing is needed, look at the vehicles, i think some of the items have smooth shading

Just don't overuse it, only when it's needed for times when flat shading doesn't look good

The default stuff looks great with smoothshading but gun models that already have over 9000 polygons don't really.

it also has way too many small details. if you started doing things like combining all of those little black squares into a couple of big black lines, it would make it much more blocky.

Nope.
If you're making stuff for blockland and don't care if it will fit then you don't deserve to make models for the game.

go for something else.
