I hope they are extruded. Otherwise it would look stupid. It doesn't have that many faces anyways.

If you can cut the polys, you should do it. With floating geo he could probably split the polycount for just that opening by half, and how would it look stupid?

When you look at it from a side it's obvious that there are floating faces. It looks lame.
