Well then just extrude and delete the middle face? It's like one button.

I want to keep the faces, but just select the vertices. When I select 2 vertices next to each other, it also selects the line. I don't want it to select the line.

Needs to be a greying color. Like a simple gradient from brown to grey, but cartoonish, not like a solid gradient.
