No matter how branched off your religion is that is where you come from.Did you know Martin Luther refused to recognize the importance of Mary? And that he believed church sermons were meaningless? Certainly not a man I would want at the base of my religion.

You're thinking wrong. It is not OK to claim yourself as something (in this case a Protestant Christian) while not strictly adhering to even the basics of whatever branch you belong to is founded on. It's being lazy, and you are rather foolish for thinking otherwise.
