Heh, my hard drive has broken and keeps on getting a disk read error when booting. So I need to know a few things before I go along and buy parts for a new computer. And yes I know that you don't have to buy a new computer for just a broken HD but my computer is outdated, just ask Otis.

1. I don't think it's possible, but can you transfer the OS from the broken HD to the new HD without having to buy XP again?
2. If it's not, can I just transfer the 'Program Files' folder from the broken HD to the new HD without breaking the installations? Doubt it though cause of registrys and stuff.
3. I will need some help from Otis or Reactor to make sure the parts I choose are conpatible when I choose them, hopefully soon.

I have a lot of stuff on the broken HD so want to salvage as much as I can off of it.
Oh and I would have steam IM'd Otis about this but of course, my steam and MSN etc. are on my old HD.
Thanks.

You can't transfer OS for sure, but you could try to make it Slave disk and put it in your new PC.
Then if you are lucky, you maybe can access your files.

Having a hard drive die is like losing a family member, only you miss the hard drive more.

Lol. Anyway, still got the OS installation CD?

It's really hard to forget up buying a hard drive. The most you can do is pay $10 too much for one. You can just reinstall XP on the new drive since you aren't using the old one anymore.

Now is your old drive actually dead? Can you hear it start up at all when you turn on the PC?

Every time you post I am reminded of how hopeless humanity's future is. Thanks.

You can reinstall the OS on the new HD, but I doubt you can get your files off a broken hard drive.  My dad has this bootable CD that can recover files and even clone a hard drive from a dying drive.

But since you are getting new parts, you probably would need a fresh start.  Just copy your documents, music, saves, and mods onto an external HD and reinstall.

Read that on google, yeah. This person was able to access all her files when it happened to her.

1. I know.
2. We took our XP disk into the PC shop to get installed after linspire crapped out, and they used their shop copy for a cost, so we gave the disk to a family member who used it. I don't have the disk.
3. It does this odd snorting noise where it usually asks what OS to boot, then shows:
_
For a while, then goes on to show this:
A disk read error occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
Every time you press that to restart or turn off the computer for a while then start again, it goes back to that screen.

Also, is it possible to install XP on 2 PC's with the same disk? It's just we were thinking of getting another cheap HD for the old computer for a e-mail computer for mum, or mom, however you spell it in America, lol.

I believe I need a fresh start, the only thing I would miss would be the fact that the old PC has all my stuff, where I know it is, where I can use it, if you know what I mean. Suppose it's just something to be overcome with time.
Also, the old computer had real trouble with drivers, so if the power went out or you turned it off at the wall, you would have to reinstall drivers for the mouse, keyboard, printer, everything that used drivers. I believe this was shoddy part decision on the behalf of who chose the parts for me to build it.

Just buy Vista it's way better than xp.

I prefer XP because it is far more stable. I would like Vista, but yeah.

Vista is stable. It just uses more resources than XP.
