i am wondering what a $4K "gaming" laptop can really do in terms of power...

What a good comp would be:
intel 920 i7 core
ATI 4850 512 mb
6GB RAM

I'd say someone had done a really poor job budgeting if they suggested the above build. The Core i7 processors are very powerful, but most applications there is little reason to spend so much on the CPU when compared to the GPU.

A better choice would be to get a mid-range Core 2 Quad processor, a decent motherboard and either an ATI Radeon 4870 or Nvidia GTX 260 core 216. That would be a "good" comp.

For a cheaper, yet still powerful, build, you could substitute in a nice Core 2 Duo processor and either an ATI 4850 or an Nvidia 9600GT.

Of course, there are also AMD dual and quad core processor available at very reasonable prices too. Not really my area of expertise, however, so I can't really help you there.

How do you even run Vista? I'd install XP on that.

You are stupid.

You are stupid.

For not liking Vista? It crashed on me in about ten seconds. I don't like that.

A nice AMD Phenom Quad Core processor or an Intel Core i7 processor is more than enough to power to run recent games and applications without a hitch. Would be nice with 2 nVidia GTX 295 video cards bridged with a nice 8gb of RAM, and you won't have to update or upgrade for a while.

I'm guessing its something to do with the biological interface aka YOU

Everything, maybe except the graphics card, is worse than my 5-year old computer! Yeah, you have more RAM, but I use XP.

It can do quite a lot. I got a laptop a while ago equipped with an 8800M GTX, Intel T9500 @ 2.6ghz (dual core processor), and 3 gigabytes of RAM. The 8800M GTX is far superior to an 8400 GS, unlike what RW said. It is more powerful than my custom built desktop. Also, this costed a lot less than $4,000.

I have never seen a laptop without integrated video.

The only thing i was able to upgrade on my laptop was my memory. I would like a faster processor but i can't find a solid yes or no answer as to weather I can, signs point to yes but I can't find much more than that.

My laptop doesn't have an intergrated chipset.

Or he tried to use it on a computer that was running 98'.

Vista is an OS, you RAM and video card have nothing to do with the way an OS runs...

I have an intel express chip on my laptop, and it sucks hard.
My laptop also becomes a hot brick after a while too.

EDIT:

Not true. RAM can make it faster (or if its corrupt, won't boot at all), and if you have improper video drivers it may cause display problems on the OS.
