DNS Servers

I'm trying to forward my ports, and I have a mac. The next thing I need to do is create a Static IP address, and to do that I need these things called "DNS Servers" apparently. I'm supposed to ask my internet provider what a few good DNS servers would be, and when I asked my parents (One of which works for our internet provider, Comcast. >_>) they had never heard of DNS servers. I'm stuck. How do I find 3 good DNS servers?

Your dad that works for "Comcast" has never heard of a Domain Name System? Hard to believe. Do you have a router?

I do indeed have a Linxys router. WCG200. But I just found something out from the parent who works for Comcast...

It turns out that Comcast charges $16 extra per month for a Static IP address, soeh basically said that if I use a Static IP address and I don't pay for it... it's illegal. o_o" I still have the feeling I'm missing something though... Because I find it really hard that everyone using Comcast with blockland is doing something illegal. =|

Wait... you're serious?! Everyone who's hosting a server and is using Comcast on Blockland is a criminal!? O_O Well... that just crushed my world... :( So I'm never going to have a server to call my own. T^T

On the router page you have to set an IP for the ports to be forwarded to. Because normal ones assigned by the router change from time to time, you have to set it to static.


Also, I've been hosting on a static IP with Comcast for over a year now. I haven't gotten any notice or anything, and even having a static IP doesn't relate to Comcast at all.

The person who is telling you this is most likely talking about setting a static public IP. A public IP is one that is used outside of your house and onto the Internet. Private IPs, like the ones assigned to each of your computers inside of your house, can have a static IP without it being any violation to Comcast as it has nothing to do with them what-so-ever.

But then back to business. What ARE they? And how do I find out which ones to use?

My static IP has never changed, that is unless I move some computers around.

Even that, it still never changed.

I use OpenDNS, its supposed to make your internet go a bit faster then if you're using your ISP's DNS servers.
