If it's going to be so widespread.. well, here's a little conversation with Destiny.

Never tell your password to anyone.
Destiny: so much for conficker
F²: haha
F²: it's 17:16 here
Destiny: 19:17
F²: it's kinda silly though
F²: if it's so wide spread
F²: why would they bother collecting your sensitive data
F²: they'd have a motherloving ton of passwords
F²: and they would probably end up with passwords from all members of a forum
F²: by which it would be absolutely pointless
Destiny: yeah
Destiny: the data storage wwould be horrendou
F²: having an army of passwords
F²: won't work
F²: so i guess we can rule password sapping out
F²: it just isn't practical
F²: next theory that people put up
F²: zombie botnet
F²: maybe to sap some giant ass government's internets and files
F²: stupid fools
F²: no idiot would keep all their sensitive absolutely vital information on soft copy
F²: there's a reason why we still read books
Destiny: indeed
F²: world domination is pretty dumb, too
F²: if it's for attacking certain countries
F²: then holy stuff
F²: for such smarts to create a virus
F²: such immaturity
Destiny: afk dinner
F²: k

Well the houses of parliament got infected by this worm, so if they were after sensitive information I have no doubt they'd find something there.

They'd also be lifting credit card details from online shoppers and I think a few credit card thefts will cover the low cost of data storage.

Infact that entire conversation pretty much makes you both seem kind of stupid.

"Hi, I'd like to buy some hard drives, I have tons of sensitive information and passwords to store from my conficker virus. I'll pay you with the money from my stolen credit card numbers!"

Then again, I guess the creator/datastoragebuyingpeople could be thought as those panicking to back up all their stuff.

On an unrelated note, I was scared stuffless when I saw this in my C:\ drive:

Turns out it was just this:

Ok Loading BitDefender Engines
State 0
Sleeping 3 seconds...
Found so far : 0x0 files/regs
Searching for Downadup file ....
   - System folder
   - Temporary folder
   - Program Files
   - Application Data
Found so far : 0x0 files/regs
No Traces of Downadup Worm were found

Holy stuff that's one nasty name for a file.

That's actually what I was thinking originally.  :cookieMonster:

A bunch on intelligent people who we assume know things say it just didn't activate, and it'll just pop up in a few weeks or so and do its thing.

Or, as some people have said, it goes off in 2012 and launches missiles or something.

C2K12
CONFICKER 2012
BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES.

ATM I don't think I have it, and if you got more hard drives for a computer that was infected, you still couldn't back you files up because the next time you attached the drive it would do the virus again.

I probably just caught it while checking to see if I have it.

That wouldn't be very f-

* Regulith's computer shuts down

Haha, that's pretty similar to the Candlejack me

asdf, do not want to support crappy meme.

Not research. I wouldn't put it on my C drive if I were stupid enough to download research anyway.

I'm starting to think all of the extra files are just to scare you

It probably just goes "APRIL FOOLS!" and then does nothing.
