It seems my computer has been affected by...something, it might be Conficker, might not be, can't be sure because there's no way for me to check now. I got home today to find my computer in an...odd...state. My background was showing but none of the icons or the task bar or anything, really. I rebooted the computer, and it started up normally and it seemed everything would be alright. I logged onto my username, and waited a moment for my background applications to start as they normaly do. They didn't. I tried logging onto AIM, but the moment I clicked on the icon, I got the little hourglass cursor, and it stayed that way. I could move the mouse around, but clicking things would do nothing. Not even the keyboard would do anything. I rebooted the computer again. Same result. Reboot again. Same loving result. Whenever I click anything (or right click), the computer locks up.

Because of this, whatever the problem is with the computer I have no way of fixing it or even finding out what it is, so I may have to just reformat the computer and lose everything.

tl;dr: Computer is forgeted, have to reinstall windows and lose everything.

And in case you're wondering, I'm typing this on a laptop.

Have you tried safe mode?

try to go to task manager end explorer.exe, and restart it, if you can

I can't get into safe mode, not even the task manager. I do believe it's forgeted.

What do you mean?
Like it can't get that far, or it won't boot in safe mode

I mean that there is no way for me to tell it to boot into safe mode without logging on and getting to the control panel. For some reason there is no boot screen for turning on safe mode. At least not one that I can find, anyways.

Get a Mac. I laugh in the face on the Conficker virus.

every year theres some new big virus to scare everyone. and people always assume all problems they have must be related to it.

If you have to continually push the F8 key from the moment the OS starts loading to the point where the little green bars dissappear.

There is technically some amount of time that you're supposed to push it at but there is no indication of when so unless you get a lucky guess the only way you can do it is by pressing the F8 key over and over.

Macs ftw.

buying a mac to avoid a virus is definitely not worth it

people who grow up on macs, were given them from parents at a young age. creatures of habit defend their precious.
that's fine and all, but a shame they never truly learn to computer

I like the setup of macs more than windows, but windows has 2 buttons on a mouse and is better with pretty much anything I do on a computer.

Didn't the news or internet  teach you anything?
