If your server needs so many rules or commands that you must devote an entire board or room to it, you're doing it wrong. The commands you need should be self-explanatory and only displayed when necessary. For instance, the "buy" commands from a shop or counter would only be shown when you are inside it or near it. The "sell lumber" command could be shown when you gain your first piece or when you enter a resource trading area. "Check Money" commands shouldn't be necessary and definitely not forced to be used every second if you forget - use a GUI or modification to the player HUD to show stats like in the CityRPG servers.

The tutorials to the Valve games are a very good example of this - you get told what you need, when you need it and it isn't in your way. Portal: Upon walking into the second room of the game, you get a small message, "E - Pick up objects". When you do pick up the object needed, it goes away. This is shown a few times during the introductory area and then players can remember it.

This is assuming that the average person will have the cognitive abilities to explain rules themselves, figure it out, remember commands, etc.

While what you said applies to most people, it does not apply to the variety of ignoramuses who inhabit the world.

I believe Wedge probed this issue when he created a GUI in under an hour that was already better than chat commands.

I host a server that's called "Roleplay. Seriously. (NO CITYRP)" and I STILL have people coming and saying "^help jobs" and asking if I'm hosting a CityRP.

Same thing happened to me on my server. People are just too stupid.

In my opinion, any GUI would be better than chat commands.

Precisely. Simple to look at and easy to understand. The only problem might be downloading it, but an alternative (e.g. cityRP-like bottomprint) could be displayed if you don't have it, or simply an RTB in-game link.

There are no commands, it's a system that informs the player on locations, rules, and other user info such as "how to buy land" or things of that nature. Why are we going off on this tangent, I was only using that as an example.

I can imagine that someone will post a picture of a tangent, as what happened a few months ago when the word "tangent" was mentioned.

Then why do you need so many rules?

I don't have many rules, they're information consoles.

Then why do you need so much information? That sort of thing should be displayed when you need it rather than in a massive Hall Of Info. Perhaps info tips coming up, "You don't appear to have a house yet; here's how you get one..."

Its annoying, but it will never be stopped. People sometimes have to learn the hard way.
Sort of like myself.

god i hate commands. how is that proper game content? its just lazy modding

omg i hate it when people are that stupid.the are basically saying, "inb4think lolz!!!!11!!11eleven!1oneone :cookieMonster: :cookieMonster: :cookieMonster: :cookieMonster: :cookieMonster: :cookie:!1"
