Those kinds of threads become something really awkward, with people assuming they have to make an introduction, or if they don't, a bunch of people say "WHY DIDN'T YOU MAKE AN INTRODUCTION NOOB" and all kinds of stuff.

Take the TIGSource "Obligatory Introduction Thread".  Very awkward nowadays.
