Author Topic: Making an MLRS vehicle, need some advice/ideas  (Read 6143 times)

Currently just I'm almost done modeling it and I'm having problems putting the finishing touches on it. Pics at the bottom of this post.

I'm adding a few neat nick-nacks, and I can do things like Transform animations (moving parts around, rotating parts, etc), Visibility animations (make things appear/disappear) and I think I can make IFLs for the tracks (animated textures). Keep these in mind if you get any cool ideas.

Problems:

A problem I know I'll run into is that I'll be trying to make the back turret operated from inside the cab instead of putting someone on the turret itself. This means I'll have to set the turret's player mount inside the cab, make it disconnected from the rest of the model (if possible), switch the player's 1st person camera with that of another spot on the turret (No idea how to do this currently) and set up a 3rd person camera point above the turret (can do).

Another problem will be making the turret fire from 8 different points simultaneously without triggering any console errors. I haven't looked at the script in much detail yet but this could be a problem.

That's about all, I'll be animating a bunch of parts on the model and making it re-paintable and such. In the end I'm looking at something a bit flimsier then the tank but with more firepower. And missiles!

Yeah I added it and wanted to make it rotate around with animations, thought it would look cute

I came when I saw the model.

My suggestion, even if it isn't much, is maybe add some doors. Other then that, nice model!

I thought of that, I don't know. I wanted to have it slightly open like the jeep and the tank. Maybe I could add some small doors with handles though

Military vehicles are supposed to be ugly to speed the thing up for quick fights.
In Iraq, an AA truck looks so loving handicapped, however it's very quick and kills fast.

My first suggestion would be to cut back on some polys, the tank used 1000's of polys and this has the same tred's as the tank so I'm thinking this'll be closer to 10,000. Though I can't tell for sure.

My suggestion on the model itself would be the front window, I'd suggest making them 1 window rather then 3 and experiment on different ways to use planes on it, the current way would really limit the players vision. Overall it looks pretty good but I'm mainly worried about the poly count, the last thing you need is a vehicle poly count to be double of the tanks making it render as much as 2 tanks when its only 1 vehicle.

It's about 9000 faces right now before any cleaning, I doubt I'd be able to reduce it by enough unless I clip the entire model. Might as well scrap it it that's the case.

There are a few shapes that are simply stuck to others that I'll have to clean, but for the most part all the cylinders and such I've used all use the smallest amount of slices possible. There isn't much else I can do unless I delete 8/9s of the model

how about exaust ports on the back of the missle pod?

machine gun turret for the passenger like the one on the military jeep?

It looks nice, but the front part of the dish could use a narrowing. From:

Gonna follow Packer's suggesting and make it a single window hole without the slits, that should cut back on a few hundred faces.
