Update on fort Arrowapples.

We have started, and in a very good location.

-Lots of gems. Everywhere.
-Wood.
-Underground river.
-River
-Soil.

I'm going to keep playing. Hopefully soon I will get immigrants and start assembling my marksdwarf army.

@Zenthos:
You manage a dwarf fortress. It's single player.

Its extremely in depth: You mine out a mountain, design every last detail of your fortress(from simple rooms to complicated machinery), fight off enemies with traps and weapons, mine for resources, farm, cut wood, and trade.
You develop and manage your fortress through the years, shape the terrain, receive immigrants, and can eventually become the capital of the dwarven kingdom.

Edit: First caravan is here. Luckily I prepared lots of Stone Mugs.

Hopefully I can get some resources. I'm going to get some wood and whatever else strikes my interest(food and bolts and dogs)
Edit: caravan left. Didn't have too much good stuff.
I managed to tap into the underground river and now have a well.

Use smelter reactions to give your dwarves stacks of 5000 adamantine bolts, and give them [SPEED:1], they'll still be really slow, but fire off nearly 2500 rounds per minute.

Can someone give a brief explanation of what the objective is and/or the whole game?

Its not online is it?

Its a sandboxy game that is fun and complex as forget :(
No it doesnt have online

Is this game on the mac perhaps?

Yes.

I have been getting a ton of migrants and I don't know what to do with them.  Only a few here or there actually have skills I need.  I just got my first Anvil from the Human Caravan, so I think what I'm going to focus on right now is getting steel production up and running.

I wish I knew how to play

Your only option:

Militarize EVERYONE!

Also that world generation parameters thing I posted generates pretty kick-ass worlds with tons of things everywhere, I recommend using it if you don't want to rummage through several maps to find that "sweet spot".

My current fortress is in some crazy savage unicorn land with tons of trees and magnetite all over the place, pretty sure there's secret stuff stashed somewhere on the map, now I'm just hoping for a lava vent somewhere.

I have discovered lots and lots and lots of lignite.

Preparing to smelt.

Also Muffinmix is right: If you have extra migrants, make a large military. If the goblins decide to forget with you, they will regret it.

Edit:

Jebus, I got about 12 migrants.

I need to furnish a few more rooms for them, and assign all of them to labor.

I have about 6 peasants who I will turn into crossbowmen and a variety of other people.

EDIT:
Tekkud Zentirosekk has begun a mysterious construction!

I think I may raise a military, it was one thing I was thinking about doing.  I haven't played since I last posted, but so far I have two recruits standing guard at the draw bridge watching for thieves.  What sort of weapons/armor should I make and give them?  Also, how should I train them?

This fortress will probably get further then my other fail forts.

Not sure.

For my fort, I drafted 5 peasants and made 5 crossbows and have a guy constantly making arrows.

Any kind of armor helps but a weapon should probably come first.

just give them all adamanite war hammers gosh

My dwarf made a masterpiece artifact and now everything he makes is a masterpiece.

He's a stonecrafter, so when the traders come around I will be a very wealthy dwarf.

When computers get super leet, they should make it in better graphics :P.

Its like the omega rts.

Edit: Have any of you tried 3Dwarf?

Best thing you can do is put up an Armor Stand at the door of your fortress and take your guards off-duty. They'll spar around the stand and any thief that comes by will most likely bump into them while they're training. You'll want to train them to Elite at least in wrestling (unarmed) and then they'll be tough enough to start training with weapons. Try to get a few extra military dwarves too, if you have too many idlers just doing nothing then your best hope for them would be to chuck them into the military.

As for the weapons themselves, wait until you can make Silver weapons to let your dwarfs spar with otherwise they'll kill each other (silver does 50% damage, perfect for sparring). You should really make Bone armor at a craftsdwarf's shop for them, atleast the helmets to prevent head damage which is permanent and annoying. Buy shields from the merchants, super important. Dwarves with shields are usually safe dwarfs (unless you forget to equip them, like I did with my champions yesterday).

Finally, DON'T USE SPEARS. Spears claim more dwarves in sparring accidents then any other weapon because when an accident does happen, no matter what the spear is made out of, it's usually piercing and inflicts damage on the lungs, heart, or neck. This is the same reasons bolts and arrows are a pain in the ass.

Finally if you have obsidian on the map, make Rock Short Swords. They do damage equivalent to loving Steel swords (133%!!), and if you have a legendary stonecrafter you can mass produce these super swords and kit them on your dwarves whenever there's an invasion happening. Make sure you don't let them spar with them though or they'll chop their heads off.
