Author Topic: Want to upgrade computer  (Read 1964 times)

I want to update the graphics card on my computer but i have no idea how to go about doing so. If you guys have any reccomendations as to which product I should use or any websites that would be helpful I would greatly appreciate it.

Edit: The graphics card it currently has is a Nvidia GeForce 9600 GS
Also how would I go about finding the information on the motherboard

Right click Desktop, click Personalize, and click Display Settings. In the middle it will say what graphics you have.

Also, we need a budget and specs of your motherboard (To tell what type the graphics will have to be), but I'm guessing you have something high-end in motherboards being you have 8 GB RAM and 2.5 GHz Quad Core.

I would think he would have a PCI Express 16x 2.0

Do you know what power supply unit you have, and its wattage?

Do you know what power supply unit you have, and its wattage?

How do I find that?

Open up your computer, and look for a large box about 6" x 5" x 4". Try and find a sticker on there, and post what it says.

I did some research, and the 9600 GS uses a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot, so you should be able to upgrade to a better one, provided your power supply has enough wattage and is of the standard ATX type.

It's on the other side you put the power cord in.

it says AC input 47-63hz 100-127V/10A
                                        200-240V/5A
Is that what you need?

Try and find the wattage of it.

ok it says
12va&12vb shall not exceed 300w
350w max output

That's kinda on the low side, what GPU were you thinking of getting?

I dont really know, I was just hoping to upgrade it. From what  I read my graphics card was on the lower end of the performance scale.
EDIT: Would it be possible to upgrade power supply without spending lots of money

Here are some internet sites
www.tigerdirect.com
www.ewiz.com
www.newegg.com
good luck on finding a new GPU

You know, I'm wondering how you can support that GPU and that processor and that much RAM on 350 watts...

The computer is a HPm9515y so, I guess it works because theres more of them out there. So would I be able to buy a new power supply?
