Nikon D5000 - New Camera

You spent 1,000 dollars on that camera? Looking on amazon, and that's the price. That's insane, I'm looking for a new digital camera, my little brother broke my other one *dropped it off of his bed, and the screen cracked* but, it was some really cheap and crappy one, I want to get a decent one because I want to take up photography. Any recommendations?

My recommendation would be a Nikon.

get a point and shoot obviously if you just want to take up photography.
That's what i started with, but if you could get your hands on at least $500 you could get a decent DSLR.

I don't think I want to spend more then 2-400 right now, incase I don't follow with it, so it's not a waste of money.
