Author Topic: Need opinion on computer parts.  (Read 1806 times)

Okay, so I'm going to be getting a new computer soon, probably the next few weeks. I was talking to a friend that knows more about the components then me, and he made up most of this list for me. I'd like some opinions on it, is everything compatible, etc. He says it should work fine, but I don't know what the part specifications really mean so I want a second opinion.

CPU
Motherboard
Memory
Video Card
Hard Drive - Note: I looked at it and it isn't SATA II. I don't quite know the difference, only that it's supposedly faster. Maybe this could be confirmed?
PSU
Case

The parts will work, but you can find most of those parts cheaper on Newegg. The only thing significantly cheaper on Newegg is the CPU though. You'll also want to get a triple channel memory kit instead of dual.

Well, the reason I'm looking at that site is because I know there are Canada Computer stores I can go to to pick it up. I rather not have stuff mailed, if possible.

I don't know though.

There's nothing wrong with getting your parts mailed unless your mailman hates you for some reason.

Also, a lot of the video card manufacturers are offering a free copy of Call of Duty World at War on Newegg.

*edit*

If you get a 260 make sure to get one with 216 processor cores instead of 192. They have a nice performance gain and barely cost anything extra.

Kaphix noted to me that the case may not be able to fit some of the components, like the video card.

Right, it's a midsize case. At best it will be a very tight fit. You could look into the Antec 1200 or Coolermaster HAF 932. I mean, there are tons of cases to pick from, but those are two of the nicer ones.

But the case is pretty, anything pretty is tight.

But the case is pretty, anything pretty is tight.
Stay out of this discussion, please.

Isn't that like the opposite? :cookieMonster:

EDIT:

Anyways, the large case should be okay. Little more, but oh well.

If I can get the CPU cheaper from newegg, I suppose I can do that. It would mean I would have to put it in myself though right? That worries me a bit.

Also, is there a huge difference between SATA and SATA II?

Does Canada Computers do the assembly for you?

Yep, that's why I was getting all the parts there.

I don't know what that means. :(

Oh well, as long as the assembly price is included in those it is not bad. Although building your own PC is a nice experience.

It means get the one with 216 processor cores instead of 192. Don't worry, it is clearly advertised on the cards.

Ye, I suppose. It's just I'm a little worried at doing it myself when I'm spending so much money.

EDIT: Is that processor you mentioned still i7? I was looking for what you were talking about and couldn't find anything. Maybe I'm just looking for the wrong thing.

Hmmm? Searching for i7, 920, and Intel core i7 920 all bring it up. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

Hmm, well thanks for the help Otis. I'll have to change some stuff then.
