If you need savemii but don't want to pay, break apart an old gamecube controller, remove the part on the d-pad that prevents moving all at once, plug it in the 4th slot, press down them all and put in a System Menu install CD

Oh I had that problem.  I let an SA change the settings, then later I restarted the server and it was working.  That may or may not have done it.  Also I am free to setup a Dedi if yours doesn't work out.
