Because they feel it's a means to pay tribute to music they grew up listening to. The official story is that they really think that they can market any old crap in a shiny package and sell it to the ignorant fanboy masses who will buy anything with the artist's name on it. In the end, it's not about anything but making a buck the cheapest way possible by doing the least amount of work.
