Author Topic: New stuffty laptop, yay  (Read 5271 times)

OK, well, my mom's friend gave me her OLD laptop, it's a Dell Latitude CPt(-V?) it came with win98 on it, but then they installed win2000 on it, what OS should I install?

Linux/Ubuntu and Windows 7.
Do it nao.
Also, how old is it?
Mine's seven years old and still running smoothly.
Acer Aspire 1350 is sturdy :D
Do have two cracks and a hole, though.

Linux/Ubuntu and Windows 7.
7 disk doesnt even do anything, after booting it, ubuntu 9.04: freezes with something about abnormal activity on mouse2

plus, about 10 years old

dun have an install disk, plus, can I use the same cd key twice?

EDIT: Puppy linux dun work, just like windows 7, it just boots into 2000

OWATE ITS THE DISKS it can only read cd r so I just use a cd r everything works except Win7 because it cant fit on a 700MB disc, can I split it into 2 or more?

No. Windows 7 will not even run on that piece of crap. You are better off with ubuntu

Ubuntu or Xubuntu and turn it into a home server.

You can use it to download files overnight, and then use an FTP transfer to download the file off of it lightning fast.

And/or set it up as a dedicated server for the game of your choice.

b-b-but I wanna use it [thinks]hmm a dedi server...[/thinks]

Also, you don't want Windows 7 on that thing. Trust me. It'll be slow as hell.

That laptop will not be able to do anything besides hosting a few files. And then the hard drive will fail and you will loose that computer too

Oh stuff, totally forgot about hardware requirements for dedicated servers.

Yeah, that thing will pretty much just be an FTP server.

If you want to use it, I highly recommend Xubuntu, as it is better for old computers than Ubuntu is.

fuuuuck but can I upgrade it? puppylinux works fine but I cant get internet workin, no ethernet ports or anything

Wireless is a pain in the ass. If you're using an ethernet cable, you have to use Auto DHCP under connect.

Xubuntu automatically detects wired connections and is easier to set up wireless connections, I highly recommend you use it. (Xubuntu has more features and feels like more of an OS than Puppy Linux, plus you can set up things like WINE a hell of a lot easier.)

Also, what are the specs of that laptop? You haven't even told us yet.
