I used to use this one program that would allow you to have different backgrounds for each screen, but I forgot what it's called, and obviously don't use it anymore due to not having dual monitors.

I do use a dual monitor program so that windows on my right screen appear on the taskbar on the right screen too - pretty handy. And we use MSN/IRC for internal messaging (hence me having ILoveIM open!)
