Did you guys do the tutorial mission at the start of the game? The galaxy is insanely massive and you were probably still in protected space or something, that's why you couldn't destroy anything.
And, asking for help from other players can teach you a lot, because for me to explain everything here would take too long.
If you need to learn what something does or how to use it, press escape ingame and then under "Computer" click StarPedia. It covers almost everything in the game.
To anyone who is already started to play: In the server "Rise of the pirates", be careful when exploring solar systems to the right. There is an entier solar system covered in laser cannons and usually a few pirates around there. I'm trying to take them out myself, but it is quite the task. I'm hoping to really attack later tonight when I have a bunch of spare time so I can really get something done. When this is done we can attack their planets colonies. That should do some real damage to their income/weapons production.
One last thing: Creola, as Colton said, please kick that Dogpoo guy out of the corp. We have reason to beleive he was the one stealing the colonys money and he tried to lure us into that trap we all got our ass kicked on earlier. Try and stick with only letting trusted people in.
