Author Topic: Making a game engine?  (Read 2050 times)

Is it hard? (I assume so) and what would you do to make one. I assume C++. I always wanted to make one somewhat like a lego one where you can build vehicles and drive them and blow them up and watch bricks and such scatter everywhere. Anyone know anything about making one? I never said I was going to try any time soon. Also, does it cost money to make one?

Just use Torque.
That isn't what I was talking about. I was asking a question about making game engines. I am not going to make one because I doubt I could do it.

It doesn't really cost money.  Just lots of time, and I doubt you could do it.

It costs as much money as you spend on it.  It depends on what you buy for coding the game engine.  Making a game engine is a hard task, and they are often made with multiple experienced coders.  I would suggest if you were to ever think of making one, you gain a lot of experience with coding and familiarize yourself with how everything your game engine uses works.  It really depends, but if anything, it is much easier to buy a game engine.

I've tried to make one. It definately isn't a task you just jump into like I did. Needs planning and a lot of knowledge. Others helping you would be good to. If you want to make something, I'd just use a pre-made engine.

I got as far as rendering 2D images onto the screen, and having the ability to section an image and then applying them as a grid. I was going to make a tile based 2D game engine.

I've made a basic platforming game engine with an SDK program in GML
:o

Someone should make an example engine that contains files you can view that help you get started making your own. I know I am not able to do this but I am still interested for when/if I ever learn how.

in most all cases, a game engine isn't developed for a specific 1 game. so time and quality is an issue. and companies hire on a group of guys to put one together, so they can license it out.
i guess similar to making a game, a 1 man project will give you just that quality lol

Making one would take years if you think about all the code and rendering things and blah. Must be quiet a challenge if you don't know a lot of C++ or whatever you're using to make it.

I would pay to see Badspot make one. :)

Costs $1337

I doubt you could code one, let alone make a full fledged game with it.

Are you still working on that Blockplanet game? Jesus, it's been a year since you posted about it on the ROBLOX forum. I thought you would've given up by now...

Garry has been making one.
