Author Topic: Lovely loving computer problems. Need a new PSU.  (Read 1478 times)

Isn't it great? A nice computer full of crashing. What the forget.
If you haven't noticed I get pissed when things don't work the way they should.

I have;
  • Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L motherboard
  • EVGA Geforce 9800GT 512MB DDR3 Memory graphics card
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 2.66 GHz
  • 4GB of RAM, 2 sticks of 1GB at 667 MHz and 1 stick of 2GB at 800 MHz
  • 400w PSU by NZXT, thats the most I can get out of it.

So my computer locked up twice today, and trying ctrl alt delete or moving the mouse or anything didn't work, the keyboard and mouse eventually turned off. I reboot. It went working again.
The second time happened approximately 10 minutes ago. I rebooted, again. Continuous short beeps. I remember my motherboard's manual has a guide on what the beeps mean during POST, and quickly delve into the back of the manual. Continuous short beeps: Power error.

forget.
So now I'm stuck with the last 6 days before school with no working computer. My laptop doesn't count, it can't run HL:S.

tl;dr: My power supply is busted and I need a new one.
I'm looking at this one. Is that a good one? It's got good reviews, and seems like it can go higher to 800w. Plus it has a nice array of connectors, PCI 6 pin connector and 4-pin molex connectors.
I am BUYING A PSU BEFORE TONIGHT ENDS.
If you have any other PSU suggestions, pricing can't be higher than $100, needs ATX12V, and a bare minimum of 550 watts. LEDs, lights and fans are fine. Needs 4-pin molex connectors and preferably desired a PCI 6 pin connector, or a 6+2 pin connector. Either is fine.

I got the inspiron 1525 from DELL.
Your results are almost as the same.
Except mine is only A little bit better.
So...Yeah, I feel you bro. D:

I really don't have time for waiting for a reply. If anyone has a suggestion for another PSU, now's a good time.

Too expensive.

Buying this.

What the balls. Now it's booting up again.

If this stuff keeps up, I'm buying this power supply.
Any other suggestions as to what may cause this?
I unplugged my cd-drive, both IDE cable and the 4-pin connector. Hopefully it'll keep up some power until I can figure it out if the power supply is really the cause.

And of course my dad is throwing his knowledge because he thinks computers are still the same from 1970s.

So it froze up again. I reduced the cpu multiplier in BIOS to 9, leaving it at 2.4 GHz core 2 duo.

Tis only 20$ mas.
Exactly. Besides, it looks great. If this is the standard when I get my next computer I am getting me one.

You have unlocked multipliers?!

ffffffffffff

You should probably get better RAM while you're at it.

He can live on the edge and overclock it past it's rated limit. Worst result is that he forgets em up good and needs to get those new sticks anyway. Unless something wacky happens and it fries his whole computer, but then we laugh!

If you fail at fixing it I'll happily take your graphics card for my pc :D

My pc's graphics card bork :<

He had his processor overclocked and his PSU fried.  :cookieMonster:

Ya, but that actually makes sense.

No, my processor isn't overclocked at all. I just had it at the highest multiplier, 10, resulting in 2.66 GHz which is the highest it can go as advertised without overclocking.

No, the graphics card won't break probably. At most it'll become underpowered. If I do get a better replacement in the future I'll let you know.
