Author Topic: AoT Development Questions (for Badspot)  (Read 5026 times)

As you might have guessed by the name of the topic, I have some questions for Badspot about the development of age of time. And badspot, I will understand if you aren't willing to answer any of these questions because you want to keep these things secret or something like that, or maybe you just don't want to answer because you don't feel like it.

The reason I am asking these questions at all is because I have really wanted to create a game of my own (I do own the torque game engine, am using blender for models, and have visual c++ 2005.) I thought age of time's online first person shooter role playing game kind of concept was really fun.

Anyway, on to the questions,

1. I was wondering if you happened to get any of the things in age of time from resources on the garage games web site or other place
1a. If you did, could you post a link to it

2. What version of the torque game engine did you use for the game, because I am having a hard time finding any resources for the version I have (1.5.2)

3. If you did not find the information about how to create this game somewhere and in fact just learned how to code from some other source and made the game with your knowledge of coding, could you show me the source you got the training from.

couldnt you have pm'd him?

What if other people want to know?

In the resources of GG search Depth-First Search for the maze generation that badspot uses.

Badspot also posted something in their forums about the hook item. It's probably in the engine owners' forum.

Off hand I can think of day night cycles, shape replicator, fxgrass replicator, foliage replicator, guiObjectView.  I believe some of those are included with 1.5.2.  Most of the resources I used are just fluff and you could totally get going with out them.  Also note that most of the resources are broken in some way.  They're just enough to get you started and if you want to use them in a real game you're going to have to fix them or re write them.

Case in point:

I did use that resource at first, but then I discovered that I really wanted that feature and the algorithm wasn't that difficult so I re-wrote it completely so that it would work the way I wanted.  That doesn't mean the resource was worthless - quite the opposite - but it's not a free ride.

Edit: Also there was a resource for hiding individual nodes in a dts shape, which I adapted to work with individual meshes to make the clothing system work.

I used 1.2 which was the newest version at the time I started.

I learned though experimentation and looking the resources and example code on GG.  I was also somewhat familiar with how things worked from messing around with tribes 2.  Note that Age of Time was not my first torque project, I spent a lot of time just making random stuff in an experimental project before starting Blockland and AoT.

There are actually a couple of books on torque now that you might check out if you're totally lost.

Did you stop working on it?

He updates it from time to time when we find bugs we like to abuse.

This is one of Badspot's few totally nice posts. I get why they're normally slightly less than polite, though.

Your post made me flash back to his drama topic where he was pissed off at everyone for loving up forums and making him change our e-diapers :(
