how do we know the sky is actualy blue?

It's not it's just a mixture of different gasses, please go back to school?

but how do we know that it actually looks blue? could be a mutation of the retina passed down for millions of years that makes the sky appear to be blue, when it's an entirely different colour?

There is no true color to the sky, just like anything else; the color changes with different light, color is just light reflected at different wavelengths into the eye so every color is perceived differently?
