Author Topic: Duck's models. (Scripter wanted)  (Read 3369 times)

The book is the only decent one. Otherwise, no.

None are bad per se, but they aren't exactly great, either.

I know they're not that great.
I thought I could get some good feedback about my models, guess not.
Keep in mind I'm not the best.

None are bad per se, but they aren't exactly great, either.

The first three are not "bad per se, but they aren't exactly great, either." but the weapons are kind of stuffty

I completely agree that the weapons could be better.

These new modelers and their complete obliviousness of polys :>

Forgot these were your models, not mine.
Thank you for pointing that out.

Lemme go get some of my Weapon models.
Post reserved.
You do that.
And I know I'm not the best modeler, nor did I ask for anyway to say how terrible they were.
In my opinion, I liked the box best, even though it's so simple to make.

i like the book, box, and speaker

Can you give me a moment to explain why these models wont work well in blockland?
Thanks.

Ahem.

First off, from what i can see, your models are way over poly. For instance, the speaker's speakers don't have to be 90 sided polygons. They would fit the blocko theme better, and they could have less polys if it was a simpler object.

A 8 sided poly or a 6 sided poly would do you just fine.

Secondly, Anyone can model in sketch up, not everyone should.
You need to understand a couple concepts of modeling before you continue modeling in sketch up.
I had to learn this the hard way.

What's a poly? Well, any three dimensional object is made of faces. And those faces are made up or comprised of triangles (or polys). The more polys you have, the bigger your model will be. (File size wise) In a perfect world, you shouldn't care about your file sizes. But, this is blockland. And waiting hours to download a model from a server is quite a burden.

I suggest taking a look at models from some of blockland's greatest modelers.
Such as Kaje, or Badspot himself.

If you notice, the weapons and vehicles in blockland have a small amount of detail. But, they still look like what they are modeled after.
This is what i like to call "Modeling in blocko".
I'm not a pro at this, but I'm getting there. I've learned to model in this style by talking to Kaje and some of my superiors, and by simply studying their work.

Every time I finish a model in sketchup. I try my best to look over it for some unneeded faces or objects. Things that you can't see from the outside, and are not needed. For instance, i can tell just by looking at your book model, that each page is a new face. That's 2 triangles per square face, and you have 6+ on each side, there are 3 sides to that book. That's over 36 polys alone. Not including the faces you can't see.
In-game. You wont be able to tell those pages apart. So why even have faces in there? Knowlege like that comes from experience.

Don't even get me started on sketchup's text-objects.
The "b" alone on that book probably has over 100 polys. Think about those curves, about 12 sides make up a smooth curve in sketch up. Whew, that's a lot of polys.

All in all, i suggest you start modeling in milkshape so you can get a understanding of simple modeling aspects.
Sketchup is babying the modeling experience, Which is why i use it. But! i know how to use it.

I'm a loving idiot.
Ignore this.
