Sounds to me like he said it in a way that says "Everyone must know who Gandhi is or they don't deserve to live" I dunno where you got the idea he wanted people to be like him. Also what he was doing was being highly dramatic to make his point clear that you should know who Gandhi is, you can't take everything literal.
