in some states (im sure they differ) you go to courthouse for your paperwork. they run a criminal record check on you. you fill out your paperwork and spend the 20-200 dollars they want.

based on your criminal check, credit check, marriage status, legal resident status, all pending decision from someone.

you wait 6-8 government business weeks.

Well I'm gonna be okay with the criminal check and maybe the legal residance check? but I'm not sure about marridge or credit.

there are many reasons for each of those that can get you denied a name change.
not usually an issue for the average person.
