It's always been there for as far as I know, seriously, why's it there?

Maybe it's there for the same reason as the <> on Rky's server?

It doesn't really have a specific reason, it's just default smf stuff. I'm pretty sure you can have the 'View Posts' option under a persons avatar on their posts (if it were enabled by Badspot) and it would have either that icon to represent it, or text saying 'View Posts' accompanied by that icon.
