What is emap?

There is a field in many datablocks named emap, however I cannot figure out what it actually does. After a bit of searching around on these forums, google, and GG, I could find no satisfactory description of what "emap" is.

Any good explanation would be appreciated.

It stands for 'environment map', which has to do with how models are rendered. Try searching around (Google, Wikipedia) for that since you'll get a better explanation than anything I could type up.
