The early Islamic Empire was amazingly advanced, but it suffered the fate that many civilizations do: fundamentalist religious takeover. Now the modern Islamic world is a scary and intimidating place, and hardly the intellectual center of the world.
Sadly there are Americans who want this fundamentalist religious government at home.
