It doesn't need to be .gif, just make sure it's not larger than 75 pixels in height or width.

Your avatar may be too big.

Resize it to 40 x 75 IN Paint.net, THEN upload it.

The problem is NOT the filetype.

32 bit = best quality

I'd pick 32 bit if I were you
