The demos worked fine for me... they're just like the theater things in halo 3, not a "video" but like a replay.

No it didn't, it didn't even record video. The .REC files were recordings of player locations and stuff like that, remnants of old Torque engine stuff. It never worked.

The recording was out after v9, I think.  The menu button was gone in v9.
