Author Topic: How To Ask Questions  (Read 483 times)

I have become annoyed by the type of questions asked on this forum. Below is a list of a few things that specifically stand out to me:
  • Users rarely honestly try to come up with an answer on their own first.
  • Users are often not willing to take the time to preform a simple google or forum search.
  • Finally, and most importantly, users don't always try learn from their mistakes, much less other's mistakes, but instead just blindly apply whatever fix was provided to them. This then leads to the user not understanding what he or she did wrong and then they wind up making the same mistake again and asking a similar question again.

If users do not make an effort to search for answers on their own first, and learn from their mistakes, do you think they deserve the time taken by those more knowledgeable to answer their questions?

Here is a guide on a good way to ask questions.

Wrong section?
Erm, perhaps. What section would you have put it in?

I put it here because this is the section in which the majority of questions that are easily answered by a simple search are asked. Also, the recurrence of questions about the same simple problems asked over and over again is overwhelming, for example:
  • What do you mean I'm using non-existent objects or variables?
  • What's special about a serverCmd?
  • my package for uselessly obfuscating chat or giving admins even more ways to torment others isn't working, here's 1000 lines of code, find my missing semicolon for me plz and I give u :cookie: ['Cause I'm too lazy to find it myself.]
  • I confused a field with a method, that's not a problem is it?

I agree with you completly, however there are some occasions where help is actually nesicary.

Reality Check: Look around you and remember exactly what forum you're on. Nobody is ever going to bother reading this.

Yeah seriously, there is usually like only one post here a day.

That isn't what he meant.

however there are some occasions where help is actually necessary
Of-course, I'm in no way trying to deny that.
