Author Topic: Which laptop should I ask to get for Christmas?  (Read 1395 times)

I'm stuck between battery life and performance here. I dunno which one I should get, so I guess you shall decide. Both of them cost $599, one has good performance, one has good battery life.

ASUS UL20A-A1
12.1" 1280x800
Core 2 Duo SU7300 1.3 GHz
250 GB HDD
2 GB DDR2
Intel GMA 4500MHD
6-Cell battery with about 7 hours of battery life

Or...

ASUS K50AB-X2A
15.6" 1366x768
AMD Turion X2 RM-75 2.2 GHz
320 GB HDD
4 GB DDR2
ATi Mobility Radeon 4570 w/ 512 MB GDDR2 VRAM
6-Cell battery with about 1-2 hours of battery life

It's up to you, I honestly can't make up my choice. Choose my laptop for me.
Poll will run for only one day.

Oh, I should mention that I need this for school, but I want to also use it to be able to play some modern games.

Depends on what you're doing with it.

Work on the road? Battery life.

Gaming? Performance.

Sorry, I updated my post.

Also who the hell voted "Other" and decided not to post?

The first one is rather pathetic in terms of performance, so if you were doing anything gaming or 3d wise with it, go for the second. Otherwise, if you prefer to web browse on the go etc, go with the first.

And a side note: The GPU on the second is pretty good, so if you want to play modern games, go for that.
Is the 1-2 hours of battery life with constant gaming, or just idling?

Yeah, I can't figure this out...It's either awesome battery life or awesome performance.

Well, there's a different model of the same series (K50) that has a Core 2 Duo and a 4500MHD in it, that gets about 5-6 hours of battery life, but this one I've heard only has a maximum of about 2 or so hours, idling.

Also I'm gonna remove the "Other" option if whoever votes for it doesn't post what else I should get.

Get the second and a portable battery charger thingy.

Have you got any other computers? If you have a high-power desktop that can play modern games, it may be wise to go for the first one, just as a portable, long battery life computer, while the hard work is done on the desktop. If you have a mediocre main computer, the second one is the best bet.

I do have a fairly nice Desktop PC (Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, 1.5 TB HDD), but I also need a laptop that I can play games on for an hour or so after school ends (it's really boring) and that I can take over to friends houses. I don't want to really drag along my Desktop PC everywhere (that'd be painful), but then again, I also want to have a bit of battery life where I can actually get things done in school as well and have plenty of time to do whatever.

I'm just gonna let the poll go and see where it leads me.

Miga why are you unresponsive, on steam, by the way?

Because I have sounds and alerts disabled.

I want to have something that's portable, where I don't need a bunch of stuff to go with it.

The second one would be great for the hour after school, max power for 1-2 hours. You could also take a charger over to your friends house, and plug it in so you can have continuous power while it's plugged in. A charger isn't too big.
Hell, I guess I'm just all for power.

Go with the HP Dv7 I have it, it's top of the line and will last me a while, my Specs blow everything that you want out of the water, then again HP is not a cheap name. I bought Call of duty 4 out of the bargain bin (lol) and get between 60-70 FPS on it.

1-2 hours of battery life seems pretty terrible. I really hope that's measured when playing games, otherwise you're probably going to only have 1 hour of batteries.
