There nothing wrong with him not wanting to break stuff and wanting parts that work together. Also you get support and warranties from a pre-build company. I wouldn't recommend dell though, there support is really bad (if you plan on needing it).

Plus keyboard, mouse, case, and network card.  I already had a monitor, speakers, and CD drive lying around.
