Author Topic: Ways to ruin a video you make.  (Read 2213 times)

After watching several videos in my French Class breaking every single rule I can think of, I decided to post a list of rules not to break on the forums because im sick of stupid videos with stupid effects.

Don't Use Default Text Intros
The Text with colored background or the Text moving across the screen in 3 different places at the same time can really make people dislike your video from the start. Try to make your own introductions and not use default ones.

Transitions
Using default transitions may be easy, but using custom ones makes your video look more professional.

Color Filters
DONT USE COLOR FILTERS!!! I can't tell you how many times I wanted to slam my head against a wall when I see filters being used badily. Dont use ANY (RGB mainly) filters randomly for no reason. It looks handicapped. Sepia or Black and White filters are ok to use as long as you use them correctly.

Music Choice
If you are making a sad video, don't use "Im Walking on Sunshine" for your music choice. Pick a song that fits the video's mood, not because you like it or its popular.

Video Warps

Don't use Video warps. Altering the screen, Mirroring the screen, or any other form of warping makes your video look handicapped.

Sound Effects
Don't over use sound effects. I remember watching a Video in History last school year that used a handicapped sound effect RIGHT AFTER EVERY PERSON STOPPED TALKING.
Person Talking, Sound effect, Person Talking, Sound effect, Person Talking, Sound effect, Person Talking, Sound effect...
It gets annoying.

Add on if you would like.

A Class where you learn French.
I'm SURE that's what he was confused about.

For WMM users, you should always change the default font on titles, and either change the goddamn default blue background color or overlay the titles. If you can't figure out how to overlay titles, you probably shouldn't be making a video in the first place.

Also, flashy transitions can really distract from the video. In general, stick to fading in/out of black/white or fading directly between one scene/picture and the next. 90% of the "custom" transitions will make the video look terrible, unless you really know how to use them correctly, or there's something creative behind it like a clock-ticking sound with a "wheel" transition to show passing time on a fun video.

What kind of sound effect was that?

Don't under use them either! You have to find the right balance. Too many and it's annoying, not enough and it feels like the video's lacking something.

This makes me want to make the worst movie ever.

Depends what the video is. Usually music will fill the lack of sound quite nicely. It just has to be the right kind of music. The wrong music, of course, can ruin the whole thing.

To be honest, same here.

True.

I always do this, I don't understand why people think it's so hard to click the change color/text/animation buttons that obviously does what it says.

Don't make your movie longer than you need it to be.

Ugh, I hate those movies where it ends, and then has thirty four seconds of black.

Actually, you want the viewer to pay more attention to the video, so fancy transitions are kinda distracting.  Cuts and dissolves are just fine.

90% of the problem is Windows Movie Maker. Your video does not need a title, especially a title that uses a blue background and stupid text effect.

Instead of removing and redoing a part of a video, make a comment trying to get everyone to laugh at the mistake.

Sure, it's an okay idea, but also shows how the creator was unwilling to refine his project.
