Author Topic: My first Gmod map.  (Read 3233 times)

Alright, Chase, I got the damn 3D Skybox working after a million "change something -> compile repeat" processes, and when I finally get the thing to show up; I get this:

What am I to do.

Nothing.  You can't fix it.

Actually, I did. I was using mismatched brush shapes in the Skybox, so the displacement was creating gaps between the different brushes. I had to use an assload of small squares, but I got it fixed. Exampled here.

Quality is bad because it was a screenshot from the engine running through Hammer, pasted in paint and saved a jpeg.

Oh, haha.  Try to make the thing 4 trapezoids, then.  That would work.

That makes sense. I think the thing that causes that is when one brush is longer than another and they meet partially at a border, so a trapezoid would definitely fix that.

P.S., what do you think of the map so far?

Pretty nice for a first map.  I don't even know how to do a 3d skybox yet, mostly because I never had the desire to learn.

The house part is the second map I've made, if we're keeping score.

3d Skyboxes are a pain in the ass. Just thought I'd let you know. They aren't too difficult to learn how to do, with the tutorial on this page, they're just annoying because you need to compile the map every time you want to test it.

This is kind of a wtf moment. I must've done something wrong with the 3D skybox because when I noclip out of where the map should end (where the 2D skybox texture was originally) I actually kind of go into the skybox. It might have something to do with something. Seriously, I have no idea why it happens.

Oh, also, progress. The house is pretty much framed now. I need to add windows and clean up a lot of stuff. Oh, also, textures and lighting obviously.

Make the outside of the skybox be the nodraw texture.

Aaaah, that's it.

Thanks bro.

Like the house?

Nice house.

What is hammer?

Does Valve use Hammer for all their professional mapping?

Ready for texturing!

I have no idea how long texturing is going to take on a map this much bigger than my first one. It's probably going to be a little bit.
