Author Topic: Computer randomly locking up/Help pick an upgrade  (Read 1116 times)

For some unknown reason my computer keeps freezing up and requiring a restart. I already did a virus scan and it's all clean.

I suspect RAM troubles but there's no blue screen. It's been happening ever since I first got a Blue Screen back earlier this month, except that was graphics overheating.

Now it just locks up on simple things, even web browsing.

Specs:
Core 2 Duo E7300 2.66 GHz
4GB RAM (two 1GB sticks running at 667 MHz and one 2GB stick running at 800 MHz, arranged in regular Dual Channel style properly)
EVGA Nvidia GeForce 9800GT 512 MB
Antec EarthWatts 650w PSU
GIGABYTE EP43-DS3L

I already took out the 2GB Corsair 800 MHz stick, it seems to be working good so far.
I'll hope to get it replaced but I want to run this by some people who know computers here and see if anyone can aid in assistance.

I suggest getting 2x2GB sticks of ram at the same speed.  You're system will like it better than that mix 'n match stuff.

I was thinking of that, but I'm really in not much of a position to spend money.

Well, does the 2GB stick work by itself?  If so, get the same stick.  If not, get a 2GB stick at 667Mhz.

Would getting two 2GB sticks at 1066 MHz with the two 1GB sticks at 667 MHz?

The 2GB sticks would be under clocked to match the 1GB sticks.  I would just go with the 2GB sticks @1066 and be done with it.  More RAM doesn't mean more speed.

I'm trying to push for getting the two 2GB 1066 sticks for Xmas at the moment. Thanks for the help.

Oh god, mixing ram is like mixing African Americans with Caucasians during the 30s

Just don't do it :C

You're quite welcome.  Don't to forget to check what memory speeds your motherboard supports, etc. etc.

Got really good reviews. You should really look into it, it's like the top rated ram on newegg.

Up to 1066 normally. Over 1200 if I OC it but I don't want to risk that up. I'm trying to save up as much money, hopefully to $1000 or more so I can get a Core i7/i9 rig.

It's 800 MHz though.
I'm thinking of getting two of those to get 8GB though.

Just get the 4GB now and then when you build your i7/9 rig you have that extra $100 that you would have spent on an extra 4GB to get new DDR3 RAM.

tl'dr: I don't think it's necessary to have 8GB right now.  Cut that in half and you get to start saving early for that new rig :D

you got a bad proccess on your cpu
my computer did that until I found a process called MyAgtSvc.exe which took up 120,890 KB of memory

The price of DDR2 RAM recently spiked. It irritates me and everyone with a previous generation motherboard.
