I think it allows a graphics card to run games at a higher setting than normal, but it makes the card heat up more and results in frying it sometimes.

graphics cards can be overclocked but in this case he is talking about overclocking his CPU, which is incredibly powerful as it is.

Lol, you don't really need 3.0, I guarantee you won't notice a difference in performance, my CPU is OC'd at 3.4 from 2.4 and, it's not that BIG of a difference, still nice though.

In my experience, don't do it if you don't need to. You risk loving up the cpu and you'll have to buy a new one.

I have a Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz, and one day I overclocked it to 2.8 GHz. I was playing Left 4 Dead 2, and on the finale it started stuttering, I thought it was just my system bugging up. Few seconds later, crashed. Turns out it overheated. Set it back to default clocks and haven't touched it since.

In other words: Don't do it. A light overclock of 0.05 GHz or something is fine, but otherwise, no.

2.4 GHz is nothing.  I am temporarily satisfied with my stock 3.1 GHz quad, but I'm buying an i7 920 with plans to bring it up to 4.0 GHz.

Funny story, my processor was a dual core until I unlocked the other two cores.  Luckily they weren't broken, just disabled.  It's now a face raping quad core.

Oh and Gen. Nick, you're a dumbass.  Only handicaps forget up their CPU when overclocking.  Just take it slow and carefully set the voltages.  Be sure to do plenty of stress testing.  In other words: Overclocking isn't loving hard unless you're mentally challenged.

I think its the mostly plastic casing, probably doesn't transfer heat very well.

Doesn't AMD also disable cores when they are broken and sells them as triple-core/dual-core?
