Author Topic: Computer Problem - No BIOS after clearing CMOS  (Read 1619 times)

I got a new processor today, and after installing it, I tried booting up, but it just stopped at verifying DMI pool data, and my PSU was blowing its fan at full blast.  So, I tried clearing CMOS to see if that may fix it.  I removed my mobo's battery and put it back in a little while later.  Now when I try booting, it starts for a second, then resets, then nothing happens after the fans spin up, with my PSU still doing the same thing.  Did I fry yet another mobo?

It was already on the cooler that came with the cpu.

Did you upgrade from a single-core processor to a dual-core? If so, how old was your motherboard? It may not be able to support the processor.

I ended up killing a motherboard that already had an unstable BIOS by replacing the Pentium 4 with a Core 2 Duo.

Can we get specifics on your motherboard, processor and power supply?

I have had something like this happen to me a few times. In my experience, it would be 1 of two things.
1. Bad CPU
2. Bad or not powerful enough power supply. <-- This seems more likely in your case.

My PSU fan thing ended up being my issue, I accidentally hit the high power fan switch.  @Miga: Yeah, I'm upgrading to quad core from single.  My mobo's box says it's compatible. It's a Gigabyte EP45-UD3L.

Also, my CPU is an Intel Core 2 Duo Q8200, and my psu is a rosewill Power series rp550V2-d-sl

waitwhat
I'm confused, you said you're updating from a single-core, but a Core 2 Duo is a dual-core...

Upgrading TO.  Also, I mean Core 2 Quad.  I'm still having the issue, but the PSU thing is fixed.

Problem: No such thing as a Core 2 Duo Q8200, do you mean E8200? Or do you mean Core 2 Quad Q8200?
Nevermind.

Also, what graphics do you have?

nVidia 8500.  I don't hear POST, though.

I really don't know with your computer, but I'd say the problem could lie with your cpu.

Did you try putting the old CPU back in?

Did you try putting the old CPU back in?
No, but I don't think that that would work.  It used to show POST with this CPU in.
